Only outlaws can pour this in their pint glass

KEVIN CONNOR

Samuel Adams brewed a beer so strong it will be banned in 15 states.

The limited-edition Utopias beer is 28% alcohol, making it illegal for sale when it hits the shelves Oct. 11 with a price tag of $240 for a 25.4-ounce bottle.

Utopias is five times stronger than typical U.S. beers and will be banned in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina,

Utah, Vermont and West Virginia. Many states only allow beer to be in the range of 5%. Some states like Ohio only allow beverages at more than 21% to be sold in liquor stores and not grocery stores. But it may be hard to get Utopias as Samuel Adams only brews 13,000 bottles every two years.

The beer is brewed with cherries, making it tart. Often compared to a complex port or cognac — and sipped from a snifter at room temperature — Sam Adams Utopias is described as an “extreme” beer by the brewery.
