No charges after driver hits nine at poll station

Child among hurt on West Island

The 51-year-old woman who struck nine pedestrians outside a Dollarddes-Ormeaux polling station Monday will not be facing any charges, Montreal police said Tuesday evening.

The police confirmed the incident was accidental and the result of a false manoeuvre.

Earlier on Tuesday, the condition of one of the nine people was considered to be “uncertain,” but police later said the 77-year-old woman is in stable condition. There had not been anything to suggest her life was in danger, but doctors did not want to make any conclusions before her treatment had ended.

Police announced Monday night that the number of victims in the incident had increased to nine. Five men, three women and a fiveyear-old child were injured Monday afternoon. A man was added to the total of those taken to hospital with injuries deemed not to be life-threatening.

Investigators had said Tuesday morning that the incident seemed to be accidental, although they were trying to determine whether it was caused by a poor manoeuvre or “conduct that might lead to charges, even though it was involuntary.”

The driver was questioned by police and released Monday night.
