The Nisga’a Final Agreement, British Columbia’s first modern land claim agreement, came into
effect. After years of negotiations, the historic agreement-inprinciple with Canada and B.C. had been signed and ratified in 1996 by the Nisga’a peoples. The agreement included the transfer of nearly 2,000 square kilometres of Crown land to the Nisga’a nation, the creation of Bear Glacier Provincial Park, a significant measure of self-government for the Nisga’a, and the establishment of a massive water
reservation.
