Higgo reels in Hadley for first PGA win

South African Garrick Higgo shot a 3-under 68 and took advantage of Chesson Hadley’s late collapse on Sunday to win the Palmetto Championship at Congaree by one stroke for his first career victory.

The 22-year-old Higgo finished at 11-under 273 at Ridgeland, S.C. The victory came in his second PGA Tour start. Six players tied for second in a suspenseful finish. Among them was Hadley, who had a rough day with a 4-over 75.

Hadley held a two-stroke lead before he bogeyed 16, 17 and 18. He missed a nine-foot par putt on 18 that would have forced a playoff.

The left-handed-playing Higgo trailed then-leader Hadley by six strokes when the final round began and was the beneficiary of Hadley’s struggles.

Nick Taylor (72) of Abbotsford, B.C., was the top Canadian finisher at 2-under, while Roger Merritt (68) of Merritt, B.C., wound up at even par.

Defending champion Jerry Kelly shot a final-round 6-under 66 to finish 14-under and win the American Family Insurance Championship for the second time in his hometown of Madison, Wis.

Kelly’s 202 (67-69-66) proved one stroke better than Miguel Angel Jimenez of Spain (finalround 69) and Fred Couples (68), who tied for second. Jim Furyk and South Africa’s Retief Goosen both shot 68 on Sunday, ending tied for fourth two shots back at 12 under. In 2019, Kelly won the event held at University Ridge Golf Course, and it wasn’t played in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Running back Le’veon Bell apparently wasn’t much of a fan of coach Andy Reid during his brief stint with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Bell, now a free agent, shared his feelings in a response to a comment on Instagram.

“I’ll never play for Andy Reid again,” Bell wrote. “I’d retire first.”

Bell did not go into greater detail on Reid, his coach since joining the team on Oct. 17 — three days after his release from the New York Jets.

The 29-year-old Bell rushed for 254 yards and two touchdowns in nine games with the Chiefs. He had two carries for six yards in the AFC divisional-round win over the Cleveland Browns before being inactive for the AFC Championship Game versus the Buffalo Bills.

Bell did not play in Super Bowl LV against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
