MAN KILLED DURING AFTERNOON BREAK-IN IN RURAL ALBERTA

A man is dead after he was shot during a break-in of a rural residence outside Red Deer, Alta., on Monday afternoon, RCMP say. The home’s owner was treated in hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. RCMP said officers from the Blackfalds detachment responded to reports of a break-in at the property off C & E Trail, near Penhold, shortly after 3 p.m. They found a man with a gunshot wound as well as the injured homeowner. Paramedics pronounced the man with the gunshot wound dead at the scene. The RCMP major crimes unit has taken over the investigation. In an update Tuesday, RCMP said the initial investigation indicates the man broke into the home and an altercation occurred with the homeowner. Mounties said there is no ongoing danger to the public. No charges have been laid.
