Prime Minister Brian Mulroney

formally apologized for the internment of Japanese Canadians

during the Second World War. Nearly 22,000 Japanese Canadians were sent away to internment camps. The government

offered a $300-million compensation package for wrongful incarceration, property confiscation and disenfranchisement. Unlike prisoners of war, protected

under the Geneva Convention, Japanese Canadians were forced

to pay for their own internment.
