Cyclist spots human body

A cyclist spotted human remains in a wooded area on William St. W. in Smiths Falls Monday afternoon.

Police in the town about an hour's drive southwest of Ottawa said that the discovery was made at about 4:30 p.m.

In a news release, the police said “the investigation … may be linked to a missing person report from July 2021.”

There was expected to be a “heavy police presence” in the area, the Smiths Falls Police said Tuesday, as officers thoroughly searched the area and collected evidence with the help of the Ontario Provincial Police and the coroner's office.

No further details were released.
