`Threw everything and the kitchen sink'

On paper Regina—lewvan was one of the few competitive races in Monday's sea of blue, but incumbent Conservative MP Warren Steinley eventually won a convincing victory.

During the brief campaign, federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh made two stops in Regina and area as his party sought to reclaim a seat it once held. The NDP'S Tria Donaldson, running for her first time, came up short but said she was undeterred by the result.

THE RESULTS

Steinley secured his second victory in the west Regina riding with 48 per cent of votes cast. With all but one of the 216 polls reporting, and before mail-in ballots have been counted, Steinley received 20,005 votes, 5,754 more than second-place finisher Donaldson.

Liberal Susan Cameron received 5,624 votes, accounting for 13 per cent of the vote.

Steinley's vote share was down from 2019 when he secured 52 per cent of the vote.

According to Elections Canada 41,994 of 68,237 registered electors, or 61.54 per cent, of eligible voters cast a ballot on Monday. This number does not include people who registered on the day.

REACTION FROM CANDIDATES

There were some nerves for Steinley on Monday night, but he as he reflected a day later, he said, “we were confident that the data we had, with the people we spoke to, that we would be successful.”

All of Saskatchewan's 14 federal ridings went to the Conservatives, but in Regina, the NDP rallied to try and flip the riding this year.

“The NDP threw everything and the kitchen sink at us, they told everyone that they were going to focus on Regina—lewvan but we're happy to have had a really strong showing,” he said.

Donaldson, speaking Monday night, said she was not deterred by the result. Having been nominated on July 26, she felt there was not a lot of time for people to get to know her. “I always thought that this would be a two-campaign race: one campaign to build and the second to win,” said Donaldson. “When I first started, no one knew who I was and now people stop me in the streets and tell me they voted for me or they're excited about the campaign.”
