This will float the boat of classic car fans

Full-on marine concept offers a range of hull designs

Imagine a Volkswagen camper van that you can take out on the lake. Or a Jaguar E-Type that could be used to sail across the bay to the beach and back again, top down.

A new company, appropriately called Floating Motors, wants to make those imaginary machines a reality. And while it hasn’t done any boat building just yet, it has released a gallery of computer renderings that do the trick of creating some watery wanderlust.

A joint venture between Italian boat maker Jet Capsule and Lazzarini Design Studio, Floating Motors is planning a fleet of floating classics that includes the familiar forms of the Porsche 550 Spyder, original Fiat 500, Mini, and the aforementioned Jaguar and VW. That is, just as soon as you and a few hundred others decide to invest.

For a US$35,000 investment, for example, you could become a full “partner,” receiving one of the “La Dolce” models (when built), which is the 12-by-six-foot, two-passenger, entry-level Fiat 500 model. Or you could just “donate” US$1,000 to get $5,000 off a model of your choice once they are built.

Note that these are not amphibious cars, rather full-on boats. Proposed models range in size and will float one of three ways: with a classic boat hull, a catamaran-style twin hull, or hydrofoil.

We’re not going to hold our breath waiting for this cool idea to come to fruition, but will certainly celebrate it if and when it does.
