Red light stalls Tory momentum in GTA

ANTONELLA ARTUSO

The 416 and 905 remain the Greater Trudeau Area.

Unofficial Elections Canada results showed Justin Trudeau’s Liberals with 48 seats in the

GTA — with an asterisk in Spadina—fort York — to the Conservative’s five, which includes Leader Erin O’toole’s Durham riding.

The results of hundreds of thousands of mail-in votes were expected Wednesday morning, but would likely only change the outcome in close races.

Across Ontario, the Liberals were likely to win 78 seats compared to 37 for the Conservatives, five for the NDP and one for the Greens.

Premier Doug Ford congratulated Trudeau on his re-election and all the federal leaders who campaigned across the country.

“For many, this has been an extremely difficult and divisive election and I would like to take this opportunity to urge unity,” Ford said in a statement. “Emotions have run high as candidates from all parties debated pandemic policies, including vaccine certificates.”

In the GTA, like it had in 2019, almost all areas went to the Liberals, including Mississauga and Brampton, with Conservatives securing seats mostly on the fringes.

Conservative Melissa Lantsman made a successful move from the backrooms of power with a win in the riding of Thornhill, joining Scot Davidson of York—simcoe, Anna Roberts of King— Vaughan, and Colin Carrie of Oshawa in the O’toole caucus.
