Wild, Kaprizov have $45M deal

Minnesota Wild star Kirill Kaprizov signed a five-year, $45 million deal with the club on Tuesday.

The deal puts Kaprizov, who was a restricted free agent, under contract through the 2025-26 season.

Kaprizov, 24, won the Calder Trophy as the NHL’S top rookie last season.

■ Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Elvis Merzlikins signed a five-year, $27 million contract extension through the 2026-27 season.

The Blue Jackets also announced that nine-year veteran Zac Rinaldo will not be invited to the team’s training camp over the forward’s decision to not get vaccinated against COVID-19.

■ Philadelphia Flyers forward Kevin Hayes and defenceman Samuel Morin will be sidelined for six to eight weeks while they recover from their respective surgeries. Hayes underwent abdominal surgery on Tuesday while Morin is recovering from knee surgery on Sept. 10.

NBA’S REDICK RETIRES

JJ Redick has taken his final jumper in the NBA, retiring Tuesday after 15 seasons.

“I never could have imagined I would play basketball this long,” Redick said on his “The Old Man and the Three” podcast Tuesday. He ranks 15th in NBA history with 1,950 career three-point field goals.

The CONCACAF Champions League will grow its field from 16 to 27 participants beginning in 2024, the governing body announced.
