NINE HIT AT POLLING SPOT AS DRIVER LOSES CONTROL OF CAR

Montreal police say nine people were injured after being struck by a vehicle outside a polling station on the West Island. The incident happened around 5 p.m. Monday in the Montreal suburb of Dollard-des-Ormeaux in a parking lot of a building where a polling station for the federal election was located. Police say a 51-year-old woman drove her vehicle into the parking lot, turned and lost control, striking the people who were in front of the door to the polling station. Five men, three woman and a five-year-old child were injured. Police spokeswoman Caroline Chèvrefils said the pedestrians were taken to hospital. None have life-threatening injuries, she said, though the condition of a 77-year-old victim was considered “uncertain” Tuesday morning. The driver, who was not injured, had gone to the poll to vote. Police released the driver Monday night after she was questioned by investigators. The collision was deemed accidental, Chèvrefils said. The polling station temporarily closed for about 30 minutes after the collision.
