TOO MANY ROTTEN APPLES

Re: “Sad changes in the city,” Letters, Sept. 17.

I agree with J.D. Russell that Winnipeg has gone downhill. In the '50s and '60s I was born and raised in the Point Douglas area (off Euclid Avenue) which I believe at that time consisted mainly of European immigrants. They worked hard and the neighbourhood was safe. I wouldn't walk through there now without a police escort. The reply to Russell's article was “Don't indite everyone because of a few bad apples.” What do you consider a few? 3? 4? 5? How about taking a walk down Main St. from Alexander Ave. to Euclid Ave.? How about taking a walk down Portage Avenue to Carlton Street. How about living in the North End especially down Aikins or Salter around the streets of Selkirk, Aberdeen, Redwood, etc. A friend of mine, who lives in the North End, is afraid to leave her yard after 7 p.m. for fear of her life.

This is not just one street/area with a few bad apples! These are neighbourhoods. Three, four, five are too many, to begin with. Winnipeg, in my opinion, is no longer a safe place to live.

LINDA GABA Stay safe.
