On this day in 1994, The first episode of Friends aired on NBC, and the show became one of the most popular sitcoms in the United States.

In 1862, U.S. President Abraham Lincoln first issued the Emancipation Proclamation during the

U.S. Civil War. The final proclamation was issued on January 1, 1863. The executive order immediately freed about 20,000 slaves in Union-occupied territory.

In 1988, the federal government announced a $300 million compensation package and apology for the 22,000 Japanese Canadians interned during the Second World War.
